A Hike to the top of Murchison Falls is not to be missed while on safari to this great park. The hike is approximately a 5km journey on a fairly paved trail (except for the uneven steps) famous known as the Bakers trail – named after Lady Florence & her husband Sir Samuel Baker who hiked the same route on one of their discovery journeys along the River Nile.

Other notable persons that hiked down this same trail include Sir Winston churchil who after laying eyes on the magnificent falls called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa”.

Typically, most visitors to Murchison falls national park do hike to the top of Murchison Falls to after disembarking from the boat safari that starts at Paraa landing. The hike up takes approximately 45 minutes and can be strenuous thus calling for one to have a fair level of fitness. On this section of the famous baker’s trail, you will get a chance to get closer sightings and photographic moment capturing the least mentioned Uhuru Falls birthed from the main Murchison Falls in 1962 when the Nile overflowed.

The sad bit though is that Uhuru Falls is under threat as a South African based firm Bonang Energy is seeking to construct a power dam – something most tourism players in Uganda are trying to stop….hard luck.

At the top of Murchison Falls, you will be amazed at the power with which the Nile bursts through the 7-meter gap of rock falling 45 meters in what Sir Samuel and Lady Florence named Murchison Falls.
